A Fort Worth
firefighter was killed and two other firefighters were injured this
weekend in a one-vehicle rollover wreck on a New Mexico highway.
David Eaves,
40, an 11-year veteran of the department, was headed to a ski trip
in Monarch, Colo., said Tim Hardeman, a Fort Worth Fire Department
spokesman.
The wreck happened
shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday on U.S. 64 near Raton, according to
the New Mexico Department of Public Safety. A 2007 Ford pickup in
which Eaves, Eric Thompson and Michael Josh Pool were traveling
apparently slid off the roadway.
Eaves was ejected
from the truck and pronounced dead at the scene, according to the
accident report.
A DPS spokesman
said snow had fallen in the area where the crash occurred.
Eaves was not
wearing a seat belt, the report said.
Neither Pool
nor Thompson suffered life-threatening injuries, Hardeman said.
Both are expected to return to Fort Worth today.
Eaves worked
at Station 8 on Rosedale Street near Eighth Avenue, Hardeman said.
He was the son of retired Fort Worth firefighter Jim Eaves.
Capt. Richard
Wier, Eaves' supervisor, called him an excellent firefighter, a
high-energy guy who never seemed to have a bad day at the station.
"He had
a real infectious smile; a real nice fellow," Wier said.
Several firefighters
were departing for New Mexico to accompany Eaves' body back to Fort
Worth.
"This is
a real tragedy for everyone here," he said.
Eaves is survived
by his wife, Kim Wood, a son, Jake, 13, and stepdaughters Mercedes,
20, and Stacia, 15.
A family friend
said Monday night that the family did not wish to comment.
